Key Volunteer – Roots to Work 
Maintenance and Making 

Roots to Work is a work placement opportunity for adults who are long-term unemployed and may have a learning support need or mental health challenge. The programme aims to develop peoples’ skills and confidence in Catering, Hospitality, Retail, Maintenance and Making, Wildlife Conservation or Horticulture.   

Role description 

Assist our Site Coordinator running the Roots to Work Programme each Wednesday between 9:30AM and 3:00PM at the Farm.  

Alongside assisting in the day-to-day repair and on-going maintenance of the site this role will be supporting Programme Participants in the use of hand and power tools, giving direction based on set brief making sure participants are learning in a safe, supportive environment.

Key duties:  

  • Assist with the running of Roots to Work sessions each Wednesday 9:30AM – 3:00 PM 
  • Instruct and oversee Programme Participants in the use of hand and power tools. 
  • Communicate clearly and conscientiously with Programme Participants who have a varying mental health and/or learning support needs 
  • Maintain high health and safety practices ensuring you and others wear the correct PPE. 
  • Assist with general farm duties when required. 
  • Present and promote a positive image of the farm to the public. 

Further Role Information 

Outdoor work: This role requires work in an outdoor space through all seasons and the ability to perform tasks of a physical nature, including lifting and kneeling. and to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold) is required. 

Hand and power tools: Using and showing others how to use a variety of hand tools for both wood and metal working. Also the use of power tools for use with these materials forms a large part of the role and experience in the use of such tools would be desirable.  

General Key Volunteer Info  

As a key volunteer you will be supervised by the Site Coordinator and other key staff. You will be offered training in health and safety, boundaries, safeguarding and any other topics appropriate to the role.  

You must inform the farm if you are unable to attend and must have an up-to date DBS check, the Farm will help with this process.
